• The capital and cultural center of the region is Tétouan. It is the only open part of Morocco on the Mediterranean Sea, a few miles south of the Strait of Gibraltar, and about 40 minutes by boat (60 kilometres) East-South-East of Tangiers, with Spain in the north and the Atlantic Ocean to its West.

• The setting of Tetouan is unrivalled due to the dramatic Rif mountains in the south and west and spreading across the valley from which Tetouan rises. Tetouan itself though is in fact situated at the centre of a large area of orchards that contain orange, almond, pomegranate and cypress trees.

• Tetouan is picturesquely situated on the northern slopes of the Rif mountain range which flows down the Martil valley, with the harbour of Tetouan, Martil, at its mouth.

• The Rif Mountains hide Roman ruins of immense scale and majesty, a thermal spa (Moulay Yacoub) and a village of perfect tranquility (Chefchaouen). The blue painted city in the wide valley of the Riff Mountains offers a fabulous and chilling environment. It’s interesting Medina makes it the perfect place to shop while in the North of Morocco.

• The Medina, or the old city is one of the best of its kind in Morocco and has even been placed on the list of UNESCO’s Heritage Sites.

• The Big Mosque with its elaborate enameled entrance, the towering brown brick Spanish Cathedral and the Babu s-Saidi, the tiled gate of the Medina, are the other striking features in the area.

• The local marina, Marina Smir, opened in 1991 and has been developed by a Spanish group to the same standards as one finds on the Costa del Sol, offering first-class facilities for yachtsmen and visiting tourists who wish to enjoy a Mediterranean resort with a difference.

The renowned Cabo Negro Royal Golf course is situated in Tetouan, the 18 hole course which opened in 1972 and was designed by Hawtree and Sons according to English standards. The front 9 holes run along the coastline with strategic bunkers and mainly straight fairways but the back 9 holes open out into full view of the Rif mountains.

• The new airport at Tangier and the new ‘Open skies agreement’ have resulted in Monarch and Ryan Air being rumoured to have signed up to Tangiers and Tetouan airports. Easyjet have recently announced their new Madrid to Tangier route for early 2008 .

• There is a huge port being built in between Tangier and Tetouan – provisionally named the Golden Mediterranean. This will take freight away from Tangier port, returning it to a more touristic destination. The new port is intended to be the main hub into Africa, with good road links being built in the surrounding areas. A new motorway between Tangier and Tetouan is under construction, this new motorway will provide excellent access to coastal destinations. A recently announced TVG train line is also being planned to link Tangiers to Marrakech.
